Placement will continue in concurrent two day blocks after the Tuesday-Wednesday block is full. Clinicals occur during weekdays only. To secure clinical placement, AHEC must receive the registration, payment in full, and all required clinical placement paperwork. *An email will be sent once registration is received with a list of the required clinical placement paperwork.
The course includes: 24 hours of training on the core competencies as outlined by MQSA, 8 hours of Digital Mammography Modality Specific Training, and 8 hours of Tomosynthesis Modality Specific Training. For more specific topics, please view the course outline below. This practical approach to learning mammography is applicable to all technologists performing mammography.
Film Screen Modality Initial Training
AHEC’s Mammography Initial Training courses DO NOT cover training in film screen. Attendees in need of 8 hours of film screen modality specific training MUST add the “Film Screen Modality Initial Training” video home study to your registration.
AHEC offers two options for completion of the clinical component of the training:
In April, 1999, the final rules of the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) became effective that required entry level training for mammography including the performance of 25 patient procedures under the supervision of a qualified mammographer. Advanced Health Education Center, Ltd. will accomplish this through one of the two training options listed below.
- Facilities may supervise the MQSA required 25 patient procedures for their employees following the didactic program. The supervising clinical faculty must be a RT(R)(M) meeting MQSA requirements. Supervising clinical faculty will be required to supervise, document and return original clinical evaluation forms for students to complete the course. Credentialing paperwork for Option 1 will be emailed after payment has been processed. Paperwork for Option 1 must be provided at least two weeks prior to the start date of the course.
- If your facility is unable to supervise the required 25 patient procedures to complete your training, AHEC can facilitate a clinical site in Houston, Texas for an additional two days after the classroom portion of the course is complete. This option requires an additional course fee and paperwork. Please view the “Mammography Initial Training Option 2” course description for details. A list of the required paperwork for clinical placement will be emailed after payment has been processed. Paperwork for Option 2 must be provided at least three weeks prior to the start date of the course. *Clinical placement is limited and is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Individuals must register, pay in full, and turn in all required paperwork to secure a clinical placement.
This practical approach to learning mammography is applicable to all technologists performing mammography. Professional liability insurance is provided for on-site clinical rotations. Clinical dress codes apply for the clinical rotations. Students will receive a copy of AHEC Clinical Site Policy and Procedures Manual with a Student Acknowledgement page at the end of the manual that needs to be signed and returned to AHEC.
