Compassion in Practice: Achieving Better Outcomes by Maximizing Communication, Relationships and Resilience – Harvard Medical School

October 28, 2016 - October 29, 2016

$895

Compassion for others and ourselves refreshes and sustains our sense of joy and purpose in our work. Research shows that empathy, compassion, and interventions to strengthen both interprofessional and the clinician-patient relationships are associated with positive health outcomes and care experiences for patients, and positive emotions and sense of reward in clinicians. This course will enable you to develop a sophisticated and deep understanding of the science and art of compassion. The course is designed to equip you with knowledge and solid skills to practice compassion with patients, families and colleagues, to teach this to others and to sustain your own personal wellbeing.

Participants will engage internationally recognized researchers in social and affective neuroscience along with innovators and experts in the clinical, educational and interprofessional practice of compassion. Keynote speakers will discuss the emotional life of the brain, bridging neuroscience to compassion training, and wellness strategies for the busy practitioner. Interactive workshops will provide opportunities to experience, practice and reflect with others on the many facets of the compassion process and its challenges: emotion recognition, self-regulation, responding to emotions, sustaining compassion in the face of suffering, inter-professional compassion and conflict resolution, understanding compassion through the patient’s eyes, teaching empathy and compassion and much more.
